exclusive interview with the uk-based multitalent rizo balic
It's not everyday we get to have a interview with an artist that is as experienced as Rizo Balic. His thoughts, insights and personal experiences makes a really interesting read!
What is your musical background? How did you get into music?
I am originally from Montenegro (part of a former Yugoslavia). I arrived in UK, in 1988, seeking a better life due to (then) a volatile political and economic instability with a small knowledge of the English language. first, I've learned English. As well at the same time, how to write and compose music. at the begin of 2002, I though the best way to archive one of my life ambitions (songwriter and composer) it will be to write lyrics and compose music. During my studies (the political science university - belgrade) in my spare time from my studies, I wrote a quiet a lot of poems in my native language (serbo-croatian) and some of those poems, I've translated in English language to set me on a road. At the beginning of 2002, I decided to join "the guild of international songwriters and composers". I wrote my fist song in English language: living in the city, a song about a loneliness. Also, I bought a software program: music works professional 2.5 version and there I learned how to compose music. after I've composed the music and printed out "sheet music", I wanted to have some ideas and advise from the guild, about "composing the music" process. I forwarded all relevant details for the song, to the guild of international songwriters and composers. To my huge surprise, a few weeks later, I received a cd, with all details about the song and the rest it is a history. As a songwriter, I would describe my style somewhere between, pop, soul, and rock. When I write the lyrics for the song, I would like to express my feelings and try to highlight any particular issues either a social, economic either a current or in the past. Most of the time, when I start writing the lyrics for the song, my main problem is to try to narrow it down. Also, most of my song's lyrics are based on my own experiences.
What are your biggest motivations?
My biggest motivations are White Buttons (Yugoslavian rock band), abba, Beatles, Elton John, Madonna, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears. What's the role of an artist in the society?
I would say artists plays a big role in the society and they could make a huge influence on the ordinary people’s lives. How do you do your daily work?
Nowadays, I spend most of my time in my home recording studio, creating a new music suitable for movies, dramas, tv programs, video games. Sometimes, some of companies looking for new music and I try my best to compose new music suitable for those particular needs. I always loved to listen to the music, and I thought why not give it a go and with some luck I'll get there.
What are your ultimate career goals?
My ultimate goal will be some of my current songs to be recorded by an established artist and bands. Majority of my songs, I wrote during my summer holidays, in different countries. I usually decide what subject to write about, get a pen and notebook and write about it. It usually takes me between 20 to 30 minutes to write a song
How do you overcome creative blocks?
If run out of ideas, I would browse newspapers articles and headline. The best example for this is the song: depressed recluse, about "lost fame", I wrote in 2007, based on Garry Barlow story in newspaper. About "take that" break-up. After reading his story how he felt as "depressed recluse" and how much he misses music and performing in front of the fans, it was enough for me to write the lyrics for the song.
What are you working on at the moment? Currently, I am working on composing background music for a movie: Chi Ann, Blaze of Fury. How do you know when a song is finished? When you are done over 500 songs, it comes as a natural to know when song it is finished. What is the biggest challenge of being an artist? To promote my music to the right people in the music industry. Unfortunately, it is not what you know, it is rather whom you know in the music industry. So, we small guy (unknown artist and bands) find it very difficult to compete with established artists and bands in the music industry. What is the biggest mistake you have made in your career to this point? As non-performing songwriter and composer, as far as I am aware, I have not made any “big mistakes” in my music career. What is your biggest accomplishment in your career this far? Writing theme songs for movies: summer rewinds and fear those who turns love to hate, produced by a small Canadian film’s company: 3 angels power inc. Anything you would like to tell your fans? For all fans around the world, please, feel free to listen to any of my songs, who knows maybe any of my songs it would be suitable for your taste.
